S.J. has 3 winners in volleyball

Three South Jersey teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the state girls' volleyball tournament with victories Friday.

In Group 4 action, Cherry Hill East beat Westfield, 2-0, and Washington Township downed Irvington, 2-0.

Williamstown advanced in Group 3 play, beating Ramapo, 2-0.

Cherry Hill East won both its games by identical 25-22 scores. Sam Foss led the way with 12 assists and Heather Leonardt added four kills and three blocks.

The fifth-seeded Cougars will next face Hunterdon Central, the No. 2 seed, on Tuesday.

Washington Township romped over Irvington, winning its games 25-9 and 25-8 and the 10th-seeded Minutemaids will play second-seeded Southern, which beat Eastern, 2-0, by scores of 25-17 and 25-12.

The Minutemaids were led by Karen Martin, with 10 service points and five kills, Alexis Louie with six service points, three aces and three kills and Jessica Thoden, who had 10 service points, two aces and two kills.

Williamstown, which beat Ramapo by scores 25-18 and 25-16, will play third-seeded Demarest, a 2-0 winner over Moorestown, winning its games, 25-11 and 25-18.

Nina Camaioni led the No. 6 Braves with four aces and 12 kills, while Jill Lawlor had four aces and 17 assists, Rachel Williams contributed two aces and five kills and Natalie Powell had five digs. In Group 2 action, Our Lady of Mercy fell to DePaul, 2-0.
