Camden offense comes alive in 17-5 victory over Nashua

CAMDEN

The Camden Riversharks honored some of South Jersey's best high school baseball players before Monday night's game against the Nashua Pride.

Nashua manager Butch Hobson probably wishes he had signed some of those players before Camden collected 15 hits in a 17-5 win over the Pride - a new record for runs for the Sharks.

The slugfest included two home runs - a two-run shot by Camden catcher Guillermo Garcia in the bottom of the second inning and a grand slam for teammate Dwight Maness in the bottom of the fifth inning.

``It was my first grand slam ever,'' said the Camden center-fielder. ``It feels good for me just to hit the ball."

The only thing that proved effective for Nashua was the thunderstorm that mercifully ended the game and sent 2, 717 fans scrambling for cover.

Among the 10 high school players presented by the South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association were Gloucester Catholic pitcher Jeff Mazzola and Courier-Post Player of the Year Andrew Noe of Audubon, also a pitcher.

Nashua could have used both South Jersey stars as losing pitcher Mike Busby had a dismal night.

``He was sharp for the first couple of pitches,'' said Sharks manager Wayne Krenchicki. ``But after that he just lost control."

Busby was one of four pitchers the Pride put on the mound in an attempt to stop Camden, but the hits kept coming.

Busby hit three batters, threw two wild pitches and gave up six runs in only 1— innings.

Former Phillie Kim Batiste started off a five-run second inning with a double to left field.

Shortstop Jesus Azuaje's triple scored Haddon Township's Brad Strauss and second baseman John Dorman.

After Azuaje scored on a Darrell Nicholas double, things really got ugly for Busby.

Garcia, who had been hit by the Nashua pitcher in the first inning, ended the night for Busby by sending a fastball over the left-field wall for two runs.

The bottom of the fourth inning saw Pride pitcher Chris Thompson give up five runs and four hits, including Azuaje' s third of the night.

Azuaje went 3-for-4 in the game with three runs scored and three RBIs.

``We finally came together,'' Azuaje said of the Sharks, who are 2-8 in their last 10 games. ``Hopefully we can do the same thing tomorrow."

Camden faces Nashua again tonight.

Sharks designated hitter Strauss, who scored five runs in the win, is not expecting the same offensive fireworks.

``We're not gonna score 17 runs every night, but it would be great if we can continue to hit the ball.''
