BRIDGEPORT, Conn.
Derek Root pitched a complete-game three-hitter Friday night to help the Camden Riversharks defeat the Bridgeport Bluefish 6-2 in an Atlantic League baseball game played before 3,070 fans at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
The win was the Riversharks' fourth straight and their sixth win in seven games.
Root improved to 4-4 with the victory and pitched his third complete game of the season. He struck out five and walked two. Root gave up a two-run home run to Mel Wearing in the bottom of the first inning, then shut out the Bluefish the rest of the way.
Camden (32-50 overall, 8-11 second half) tied the score in the top of the second inning when first baseman Dan Held hit an RBI double and left fielder Darrell Nicholas delivered a run with a single.
Dwight Maness' home run to left in the third inning gave the Riversharks the lead for good.
Designated hitter Guillermo Garcia added a solo homer in the sixth inning to make the lead 4-2.
Catcher Joe Goodwin led the 11-hit Riversharks attack with three hits. He drove in a ninth-inning run with a double. Garcia and Nicholas had two hits apiece for Camden.
The teams play at Bridgeport again at 6:35 p.m. today. Bridgeport (43-40, 13-7) sends Ron Frazier (5-6, 3.12 ERA) to the mound against Camden's Frank Sanders (0-1, 7.71 ERA).
