Riversharks find some offense and defeat the Surf

ATLANTIC CITY

The Camden Riversharks played the type of game that can turn a season around Saturday night.

But that's for another time. This team personifies the one-game-at-a-time theory.

Guillermo Garcia hit three solo home runs, but the biggest hit was the one Dwight Maness took in the face as the Sharks beat Atlantic City 10-8 Saturday night in front of 2,510 at the Sandcastle. The game featured five lead changes, the final coming in a four-run seventh for the visitors.

The Sharks weren't short on offensive heroes this night. Nelson Abreu (2-for-3, two runs scored), Garcia (3-for-4, three RBIs), Maness (3-for-3, two RBIs) and Brad Strauss (3- for-5 with two doubles) all looked strong at the plate.

Down 7-5 with one out at the start of the seventh, Garcia hit his second of three home runs to left. Garcia's first two homers both landed on the runways of adjoining Bader Field and weren't what you would call a Sandcastle home run. The Sandcastle is notorious around the league for its short porch in left field.

Brad Strauss, a graduate of Haddon Township High School, followed with a single. Strauss moved to second as he left on the pitch that Darrell Nicholas grounded to first base for the second out of the inning.

During the dismal first half, that would have signaled the end of the rally for the Sharks. But this is a new half and maybe a new Sharks team.

Consecutive walks from reliever Dave Mastrolonardo to Abreu and Joe Goodwin loaded the bases for Maness. Maness was 2-for-3 at the time with an RBI and a run scored.

With the count full, Mastrolonardo came in high and tight and hit Maness in the mouth. Maness went down in agony, but after a 10-minute delay stayed in the game. In the ninth he doubled.

With the game tied Andres Duncan singled home the final two runs of the inning and the Sharks held an improbable 9- 7 lead.

Garcia's third home run tied a Sandcastle record with Atlantic City's and Buena graduate George West, Juan Thomas and Lehigh Valley's Joe Viera.

Jimmy Williams picked up his 10 save, but it wasn't easy. He allowed one run on two hits and a pair of walks but Garcia speared a line drive by Jack Joffrion at third to end the game.
