Marrero, Bluefish top Sharks

Courier-Post Staff

Oreste Marrero hit a home run and a double for two RBIs as the Bridgeport Bluefish handed the Camden Riversharks a 5-3 loss in an Atlantic League game played at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn., Monday night.

The Bluefish (30-26) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Marrero doubled home Rolo Avila, who walked and stole second base, and scored on a fielder's choice by Kinnis Pledger.

After Camden (21-35) rallied to tie the score in the fourth, the Bluefish put away the game with Brendan Kingman' s second hit of the game, an RBI single in the fifth, Bill Rich's RBI single in the seventh and Marrero's solo home run in the seventh.

Camden, which scored a run in the eighth to end the scoring, was led by shortstop John Dorman, who went 2-for- 4, and third baseman Brad Strauss, a Haddon Township High School graduate who connected on his 23rd double of the season in four at-bats.

Before the game, the Riversharks learned they had five players selected to this year's Atlantic League All-Star Game, which will be held July 11 in Newark.

Riversharks outfielder Thomas Howard was named a starter for the Southern Division team while pitcher Ryan Shurman, reliever Jimmy ``Slim'' Williams and first baseman Dan Held were named reserves. Former Camden pitcher Del Matthews also was named as a reserve, but he recently left the team to sign with a team in the Mexican League.

•Lehigh Valley 7, Atlantic City 0: At Atlantic City, a two-run home run by Francisco Lebron sparked a seven-run ninth inning as the Diamonds defeated the Surf ( 15-40).
