BRIDGEPORT, Conn.
The Camden Riversharks couldn't come up with the big hit when they needed it.
The result was a 5-4 loss to Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon in an Atlantic League baseball game at the Ballpark in Harbor Yard in front of a crowd of 2,927.
The Riversharks had runners on first and third with no outs in the seventh inning in a 4-4 game, but couldn't push across a run in the inning. Bluefish reliever Apolinar Garcia struck out the Riversharks' Dan Held and Kim Batiste and then got a force out to end the inning.
Camden nearly took the lead in the top of the eighth inning, but Bluefish right fielder Billy Rich threw out Joe Goodwin in at the plate and center fielder Rolo Avila made a diving catch at the wall to end the inning.
Camden scored first in the first inning when leadoff hitter Brad Strauss walked and scored on a John Dorman's double right field. Dorman scored on a single by Held to make it 2-0. In the second inning, Strauss, a Haddon Township graduate, singled and scored on a Dorman triple to make it 3-0.
Bridgeport tied the game in the third inning with the key hit being a two-run single by Brendan Kingman. The took a 4-3 lead in the fourth on a Duane Singleton triple.
Camden tied it in the sixth on an RBI double by Andres Duncan. Bridgeport took the lead for good on a sacrifice fly by Jose Delgado in the seventh.
Mark Schurman took the loss on the mound for Camden. He fell to 5-4, while pitching eight innings and allowing six hits.
The Bluefish's Mike Guilfoye retired the side in order in the ninth inning for his 11th save.
The teams play again tonight and Tuesday at 7:05.
