Schurman's fine pitching effort helps Sharks win 2nd in row

Once again, it's been proven that there aren't too many problems in baseball that good starting pitching can't overcome.

For the second straight night, the Riversharks got an outstanding effort on the mound, this time from right- hander Ryan Schurman. He allowed four hits over seven innings as the Riversharks went on to beat the Long Island Ducks 4-2 Tuesday before 3,253 fans at Campbell's Field.

In making his first start of the season, Schurman (4-2) nearly duplicated the effort turned in by Lincoln Mikkelsen, who stopped the Ducks on three hits over eight innings in a 2-1 win Monday.

In fact, he credited Mikkelsen for setting the tone for the way the series has progressed.

``He kind of got things started for us, and now we have two in a row,'' Schurman said.

But Schurman was not far behind Mikkelsen's effort and was hardly in trouble all game.

The seven-inning performance was more than was expected by manager Wayne Krenchicki, who went into the game hoping for five strong innings.

``But after five, his pitch count was low and he was strong,'' Krenchicki said of Schurman.

It remains to be seen if the outing will earn Schurman a place in the rotation, but Krenchicki hinted that move could be made as the Riversharks approach the second half of the season.

The victory was the Sharks' second straight after five losses in a row and eight losses in 10 games. The Ducks fell to their fifth straight defeat.

The Sharks gave Schurman a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Brad Strauss singled in a run.

After the Ducks tied the game 1-1, the Sharks put it away with a three-run fifth.

The runs scored on Guillermo Garcia's third home run of the season and Dwight Maness' two-out, two-run single.
