CAMDEN
The Camden Riversharks officially added two new pitchers and subtracted one from their staff Sunday.
How great the loss of starter Del Matthews will be may not be known for another couple of weeks. The left hander had been the most consistent member of a staff that is last in the Atlantic League with an ERA of 5.19.
Matthews left to join the Mexican League, and with him goes the league's leader in innings with 69 1/3.
"It happens," Sharks manager Wayne Krenchicki said. "I don' t mean to whine, but we've been hit pretty hard this year. That's usually how it goes, there is a run and then it settles down. Mexico is getting ready to start their playoff season and they're done by August.
"It's going to be very hard to replace Del. He's been our workhorse and best competitor through the first half. But at least we're covered with numbers."
New additions: The Sharks added pitchers Lincoln Mikkelsen, who will get his first start tonight against the Long Island Ducks, and Frankie Sanders.
Mikkelsen played in Taiwan before joining the Sharks, which is a bit of a switch. Yuri Sanchez and Gil Martinez, who are both on the inactive list, left the Sharks to join teams in Taiwan.
Sanders trip to Camden was a little more adventurous.
Sunday, Sanders was driving from his home in Florida. The right-hander got caught in nasty weather in North Carolina Friday. Sanders' shaky cell phone prevented him from contacting Krenchicki.
Sanders safely arrived Saturday night and was added to the roster Sunday.
The right hander comes to Camden with a career record of 46- 37 and an ERA of 3.91 in 148 games.
Still searching: With only two middle infielders on the roster, shortstop John Dorman and second baseman Brian Sherlock, the Sharks continue to look for backups.
Sherlock has appeared in 39 games, which is third highest on the team.
The Bishop Eustace graduate has been hitting the ball well enough, but has encountered a lot of bad luck.
