Riversharks almost set for home opener
With a day left before the Camden Riversharks' home opener against Lehigh Valley, the team office is, as expected, hectic. Workers are putting in double shifts to get the $20.5 million stadium ready for Friday's opener. Gates open at 5 p.m. for the 6:35 p.m. game. On Wednesday, landscaping work was being done around the outside of Campbell's Field and workers were laying bricks for the children's playground.

  • Wacky promotions keep fans coming back
Minor-league baseball promotions have always had an urban legendlike quality. Did a team in North Carolina really give away souvenir bats on Tonya Harding night or is that just a rumor? Are those really giant eyes racing around the park in Lakewood or are we just seeing things? And if you're going to give away a car, shouldn't it start?

  • Stadium step in right direction for Camden
Though it is expected to boost Camden's image, Campbell's Field is unlikely to have a significant effect on what some say counts most - the city's bottom line.

  • Stadium not a one-shot deal for Shilling
Stephen R. Shilling leaves nothing to chance. Instead, the president and CEO of the Voorhees-based Quaker Group, a diversified real estate, construction and mortgage company, plots a course, hires crackerjack people, then turns them loose.

  • Perfect time to be a baseball fan in Jersey
More minor-league baseball teams will play in New Jersey this year than ever before. That's a home run for fans and families seeking affordable entertainment, but it's also a concern for municipalities who have invested millions of dollars in stadiums for teams they fear might strike out.

  • Architect brings sense of history to ballpark
George Hibbs understands history. So much so that it has become an integral part of his job. The beneficiary of this knowledge looks to be the Camden Riversharks.

  • For GM Brandt, new teams are old hat
It's not a new experience for John Brandt. The general manager of the Camden Riversharks has gone through the process of building a franchise before. He was the assistant general manager for the Bridgeport Bluefish in 1998, the inaugural season for both the Bluefish and Atlantic League.

  • Camden's new ball team has experience
The Camden Riversharks may be a new entry in the Atlantic League, but they're not using that as an excuse for failure on the field this season.

  • Riversharks top Patriots
Del Matthews improved to 2-0 and the Camden Riversharks snapped the Somerset Patriots' four-game winning streak Wednesday in a 5-2 Atlantic League South Division game. Matthews allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits in 7 1/2 innings to pick up Camden's third win of the season.
