Dredging funds approved

CAMDEN -- The Delaware River Port Authority on Wednesday approved funds for river dredging that could bring more commerce to the ports of Philadelphia and Salem.

A $508,000 DRPA allocation will deepen a side channel in the Delaware River to Philadelphia's piers 96 and 98, enabling cargo ships of the Hyundai Merchant Marine to deliver up to 40,000 Hyundai cars a year. The dredging funds are contingent on a contract with Korean-based Hyundai.

And a DRPA pledge of $2.4 million will help dredge the Salem River in Salem County to a 16-foot depth. It would match $6.8 million in federal funds for the dredging project. The small port of Salem, operated by the South Jersey Port Corp. in Camden, is trying to build trade with several Caribbean islands, said New Jersey DRPA commissioner James Weinstein.
