CAMDEN -- Rabbi Fred J. Neulander could face the death penalty after a Camden County grand jury indicted him this morning on capital murder, felony murder and conspiracy in the Nov. 1, 1994, death of his wife, Carol.
The indictment upgrades the charges of conspiracy and accomplice to murder, meaning he now faces either death or life in prison if convicted. Previously, he faced 30 years in prison.
"This matter received the same careful, deliberate review which is undertaken in all potentially capital cases," Camden County Prosecutor Lee Solomon said in a prepared statement. "I took into account all of the evidence, the circumstances surrounding the case and the feelings of this victim's family. We are never anxious to designate a case as capital, however, in this instance I am convinced it is both necessary and appropriate."
Neulander will be arraigned at a hearing set for 2 p.m. Wednesday before Camden County Superior Court Judge Linda G. Rosenzweig. He is expected to be held without bail.
He is currently out on $400,000 bail.
