Rabbi Fred J. Neulander would not be the only clergyman on Death Row in the United States if a jury sentences him to die for his wife's murder.
The sixth-generation rabbi also is not the only clergyman to face murder charges. At least two other clergymen have been tried on murder charges recently, and one, the Rev. John David Terry, is on Death Row in Tennessee.
Terry, 58, was sentenced in 2001 to die by electrocution for the murder and beheading of a handyman in his congregation.
The Pentecostal minister was trying to start a new life by assuming the identity of James Chester Matheney, 32, who had been a drifter. After killing Matheney, Terry dismembered him and dressed his torso in his clothes before attempting to burn down his church.
In Fresno, Calif., Paul Hurth, 46, a Baptist minister and former policeman, was charged in 2000 with killing Ralph Peter Gawor, 43, the husband of his alleged mistress.
Hurth was acquitted on the murder charge, but was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 21 years in state prison.
