Carol Neulander's killers have been sent to separate state prisons, about as far away from each other as possible, with one in Newark and the other in Cumberland County.
Paul Michael Daniels, now inmate No. 529867C, is at Northern State Prison in Newark, according to state Department of Corrections officials. His accomplice, Leonard Jenoff, inmate No. 27401A, was sent to Bayside State Prison in Leesburg.
Daniels and Jenoff, who were hired by Cherry Hill Rabbi Fred J. Neulander to kill his wife Nov. 1, 1994, were each sentenced last month to 23 years in prison. They admitted to brutally beating the 52-year-old mother of three with a pipe, and pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in exchange for testifying against the rabbi.
The two killers testified that Neulander, the former senior rabbi at Congregation M'kor Shalom in Cherry Hill, promised to pay them $30,000 to carry out the murderous plot.
The pair could be eligible for parole in as little as 7 1/2 years, with credit for time already served. Jenoff came forward in May 2000 and then tricked Daniels into a taped confession.
The rabbi, 61, was found guilty in November of hiring Jenoff and Daniels to kill his wife of 29 years so he could continue an affair. On Jan. 16, he was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 30 years; he's now an inmate at New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.
The trial - in which jurors from Monmouth County convicted him of capital murder, felony murder and conspiracy - was Neulander's second. The first, held in Camden in fall 2001, ended in a mistrial when jurors deadlocked on all charges.
Neulander has less than a month left to file an appeal. His attorney, Michael Riley, has said the rabbi would probably receive a public defender, although Riley planned to help in the appeal.
Riley was in court on Monday and could not be reached.
Immediately after sentencing, Jenoff and Daniels spent about a week at the Central Reception & Assignment Facility in Trenton, undergoing a battery of tests to determine which prisons would be their new homes, said Matt Schuman, a Corrections Department spokesman.
Officials transferred Daniels last week to Northern State. Jenoff, who wanted to go to Riverfront State Prison in Camden, was sent to Bayside on Monday.
"They are both in the general population," Schuman said.
Before sentencing, both were lodged in the Camden County Jail.
One of the assignment considerations was not to place Jenoff, Daniels or Neulander in the same facility, Schuman said. As it turns out, the three are spread across the state.
While Jenoff's age - he's 57 - was not taken into consideration, 28-year-old Daniels' mental health was a factor, Schuman said.
Both may participate in work and educational programs.
