Anatomy of a bat The skulls of bats are subject to considerable variation, as are their external features.
Most share a light, pared-down bone structure as a modification for life in the air. Teeth patterns vary according to the types of food eaten.
Extreme adaptations for flight are evident from the bat's skeleton.
the shoulder girdle and forelimbs are huge and are the main strutcural members of the wings. The ulna bone is slight, and the slim humerus and radius bones support the front of the wing skin. Long outstretched fingers carry the outer section of the wing, and the thumb is reduced to a small hook at the front edge of the wing. The pelvis and hind legs are small.
