WASHINGTON
(UPI) - The Navy has officially recognized the claim of New Jersey
on the battleship USS New Jersey, Sen. Williams, D-N.J., said
today.
Fearing that the Navy might plan to scrap
the ship, the senator sent a telegram to the Navy July 24 asking
that the ship be made available for a state memorial rather than
be scrapped when it is no longer needed for defense purposes.
Williams said today he received a telegram
from Kenneth E. Belieu, assistant secretary of the Navy, stating
that the Navy had no current plans to scrap the ship and would
be "honored to record your claim to her for any future consideration."
